Cleanings and oral hygiene
A hygiene visit removes the hardened plaque a toothbrush cannot reach, which is what causes gum disease and most decay between teeth. For most people that is twice a year, and for most PPO plans it is covered in full.
Routine clean or deep clean?
They are not the same appointment, and you should know which one you are being booked for.
- A routine clean removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, and polishes
- A deep clean goes below the gumline, usually over two visits, and is numbed
- A deep clean is treatment for gum disease, not an upsell on a regular clean
- We show you the pocket depths and the X-rays that led to the recommendation
What the appointment involves
Around 45 minutes for a routine visit.
Check the gums
We measure the pockets around each tooth. That number is what decides routine or deep.
Remove the tartar
Ultrasonic and hand instruments above and, if needed, just below the gumline.
Polish and floss
Stain comes off here, which is the part most people notice.
The exam
The dentist checks teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and tells you what if anything needs doing.
What it costs
A clean with an exam and the X-rays we need is $89 for patients without insurance. Most PPO plans cover two a year in full. A deep clean is quoted per quadrant once we have measured the gums. You get the figure in writing before anything is booked, and we check your insurance first so you know your share, not just the list price.
Common questions
How much does a dental cleaning cost?
A clean with an exam and X-rays is $89 here if you are paying out of pocket, and most PPO plans cover two routine cleans a year with nothing to pay. A deep clean costs more because it is treatment, and it is quoted once we have measured your gums.
Does a cleaning hurt?
A routine clean should not. If your gums are inflamed they may be tender, which usually means there is gum disease to treat. A deep clean is done numb.
How often do I need one?
Twice a year for most people. Every three or four months if you have been treated for gum disease, because the pockets refill faster.
Why is my dentist recommending a deep cleaning?
Because the pockets around your teeth measured deeper than healthy. Ask to see the chart and the X-rays; we will show you. If the numbers do not justify it, you do not need it.
