Custom mouthguards
Two different appliances, often confused. A sports guard protects against a knock; a night guard protects against your own jaw muscles. Both are made from an impression of your teeth, and both last far longer than the shop-bought version.
Sports guard
For contact sport. Absorbs the impact that otherwise fractures a front tooth or splits a lip.
Night guard
For clenching and grinding. Takes the load your enamel has been taking every night.
Retainer
Holds straightened teeth where the treatment put them. A different appliance again.
Why custom beats the boil-and-bite
The pharmacy version is better than nothing, and that is the honest limit of it.
- It fits your teeth, not an average of everyone’s
- Thin enough to keep in, so it is actually worn
- Does not shift when you talk, breathe or take a hit
- Lasts seasons rather than weeks
How it is made
Two short appointments, about two weeks apart.
Scan or impression
A digital scan of your teeth, which takes a few minutes and involves no putty.
Made to your bite
Built in the thickness the job needs. A sports guard is heavier than a night guard for a reason.
Fitted and adjusted
You wear it in the chair and we adjust it until it sits without pressure points.
What it costs
A custom guard is quoted at your appointment, by type and thickness. Many PPO plans cover part of a night guard when there is documented wear or jaw pain. You get the figure in writing before anything is booked, and we check your insurance first so you know your share, not just the list price.
Common questions
How much is a custom night guard?
It is quoted at your appointment and depends on the type and thickness. It costs a fraction of rebuilding the teeth it is there to protect, and many PPO plans pay part of it where there is documented grinding.
How long does one last?
A night guard typically lasts several years. If yours wears through in months, that tells us how hard you are grinding and is worth a conversation.
Can I use a sports guard at night?
Not really. A sports guard is thick and covers more of the gum, which makes it uncomfortable to sleep in and means it ends up on the bedside table.
How do I clean it?
Rinse it, brush it with cool water and no toothpaste, and let it dry completely before it goes in the case. Hot water warps it.
